Why This Cricothyrotomy Training Was Unique
This session focused on more than just the cricothyrotomy technique. It challenged the team to perform it on an obese patient – a scenario they often face. Obesity adds complexity to airway management. Extra neck tissue makes it harder to locate landmarks fast, especially in emergencies.
Emulant’s BOB mask created that challenge. It was designed to replicate obese anatomy, with deep soft tissue and lifelike skin movement. This allowed participants to practise a realistic and high-risk procedure in a safe setting.

This session took place at SimiaLab, the simulation centre at Alicante’s General Hospital. It combined Emulant’s BOB mask, Laerdal’s SimMan, and a skilled clinical team. Together, they recreated a realistic and emotionally intense scenario.
To increase urgency, the team also used simulated blood. The visual and physical demands kept participants fully engaged — helping them prepare for real-life crises.
Durable, Cost-Effective Training Materials
Emulant also provided a reusable training kit. Both the BOB mask and the gelatin inserts (made with Emulant’s moulds) were used multiple times. This reduced the cost per session while maintaining realism. It’s a sustainable way to run more frequent, high-impact simulations.
